Ramblings of an old man along the Missouri River in Montana

Bald Eagle in Missouri River near Hardy Creek

Today January 9th, 2012 I made my first New Year’s resolutions, but it’s ok because I’m old (almost 60) and everyone knows old folks are a little slow!

New Year’s resolution

  • To do this blog at least twice a week (I was thinking everyday but an old guy might not be that ambitious).  In each blog I will tell you of my fishing adventures and show you photos of Montana.
  • To walk at least an hour every other day (more ambitious) bad back and leg allowing me to.
  • But most important resolution is to fish as often and as many different rivers and streams as possible this year.  I live on one of the best Blue Ribbon Trout Streams in the United States, the Missouri River at Hardy Creek (about 12 miles downstream from Craig).  I am also within a one or two hour drive of 6 other Blue Ribbon Trout Streams.

Today as I was beginning my walk I observed a Bald Eagle In the river I’m not sure if the eagle had caught a fish and was having lunch or just bathing, whichever, it presented a good photo opportunity.

About 30 minutes into my walk I noticed this man and his best friend fishing the Missouri just upstream from the Interstate 15 bridge crossing the Missouri  River near Hardy.  What a fine outing for a man and his

dog.  It was about 45* F and windy, this year with the warmer temperatures, have also came high winds, today’s 24 MPH WSW. Still a nice day, any day on the river is a good day!

With my picture taking and sight, seeing this was a 2 hour adventure.  With a little luck maybe I will be able to fish this hole I discovered on the river.

Fishing hole on the Missouri

Looks good to me what do you think?  Are there any fish here?   The man with the dog caught one while I was watching them, on the other side of the river of course.

On The Missouri River Today Fishing…Sight Seeing

Bald Eagle - Fish PouncingAt 6:30 AM this morning, while cooking a Cowboy Skillet Pancake breakfast for my guests Kelly and Ewald, a couple from Ketchum, Idaho, I heard an eagle screeching and went out on the deck to see what was going on.  On the island just north of the  deck a Mule deer faun was standing, legs braced staring down at an adult Bald Eagle that was standing about 10 feet away… directly over head  a young Bald Eagle was circling and screeching.  As the adult eagle took  flight the young eagle attacked it and struck it several different times while they were in-flight across the river. The adult eagle landed in a tree top on the other side of the river near the irrigation pilings, and the young eagle landed about 20 feet higher up the hill on a dead branch.   It occurred to me that this was not an attack but maybe some kind of a training exercise. This thought  was pretty much confirmed later when I looked for  eagles again they were both sitting on the dead branch!

Ewald is from Austria and wholesales Fly-fishing gear in Europe.  He lives in Sun Valley, Idaho most of the year his wife Kelly and travels back to Austria several times a year for business.  He was excited about fishing the Missouri this morning Kelly and he were putting in at Holter Dam and floating to Craig for the first run this morning.

As they were finishing breakfast this morning a good hatch of Tricos was taking place right off the deck.  Ewald told Kelly “They are doing the wedding dance we have to be on the river by the time it is over and they start to hit the water LET’s GO!”

Two Sisters trek through Montana, and visit Yellowstone & Glacier National Parks “2nd Half”

Water Falls in Yellowstone National Park mid June 2011

It was hard to leave the Tetons behind, but we were really looking forward to another day in Yellowstone to see the iconic Grand Canyon and both the upper and the lower falls. It seems as if we drove along water most of the day, with smaller lakes dotting the way until we reached the shores of massive Yellowstone Lake, the source of the Yellowstone River. By the time we reached the Lower Falls, we were both hungry and tired. Mary Jane was afraid we had lost the best light of day for photographing the falls. But to our amazement and delight the subdued evening light actually enhanced the depth of color. The Lower Falls were roaring with the spring run-off, wondrous, but making it difficult to talk. The Upper Falls swept through the canyon, like the lesser sister of the Lower Falls, “steaming clouds of glory” in her thundering descent. Even though it was between 5-6:30 pm, the light was quite remarkable as it streaked the canyon’s flanks in a palette of rich earth tones, varying from pale sand and amber to burnt umber and deep orange! Upon reviewing the photos in our little Canyon Village cabin, Mary Jane was ecstatic over what her camera had captured! As a seasoned photographer, she knows such light is rare, if not impossible. That wasn’t our only unexpected blessing of the day.  Well after dark, Mary Jane squealed as she pulled back the curtains and looked outside. “Pat, you won’t believe it. Hurry, get out of bed! Come and see!” Only a sister who knows me so well could anticipate the childlike delight I felt as she whispered, “It’s snowing!” The flakes were small and delicate, more like a fine dusting of powdered sugar covering the ground and our parked car. We squealed aloud together!  Snow, beautiful snow was falling in Yellowstone National Park. It was the fitting close to an already perfect day!

Two Sisters trek through Montana, and visit Tetons, Yellowstone National Parks “1st Half”

August 13th, 2011 by sorendetienne

Pat & Mary Jane, sisters from Oregon

As many adventures do, it all started out as a promise. It could have easily been a dare, but let’s just call it a promise. When my sister returned from a trip with her husband to Glacier National Park two years ago, that’s all I heard about for days. She enthused about the mountains, the lakes, the vistas, the wildflowers, the red bus tour along the ever winding Going-to-the-Sun-Road, the moose they saw in Swift Current Lake, and so much more. When she suggested that the two of us go some future day, how could I say no?

In fact, I promised that we would go, and soon. We are getting up there in years, my older sister faster than I, so we don’t have time to put off until tomorrow what we definitely want to do in our lifetimes!

The Family reunion on the Missouri River

Megan and her parents came to Montana for a Family Reunion and a little R&R under the Big Sky. Her father Greg, his sister Barbara, and brothers, Larry and Chuck met at the River’s Bend Lodge with children and spouses.

During their stay at the Lodge in  July  they attended the Air Show in Great Falls, did some hiking at Tower Rock State Park (only 10 minutes from the Lodge),  fished a little, some river rafting, and  a lot of reminiscing of  child hood days in Montana.

A Trip to Montana for a little R & R and a Wirehaired Pointing Griffons Puppy

June 18th, 2011 by sorendetienne

Ruby a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

Meet Ruby a Wirehaired Pointing Griffons puppy and the Star of this Blog

Lauri and Blair visited the River’s Bend Lodge along the Missouri River last week and took in some of the unique Montana scenery and history.  The main purpose of their trip to Montana was to get  Ruby,  a Wirehaired Pointing Griffons  puppy.  Searching the web for  Griffons Breeders they  found one in Choteau with puppies that were just the age they wanted.
Being an artist Blair was excited to visit the Charles Russell Museum in Great Falls were they were able to see  original paintings and bronzes from many Western Artists as well as some of Charles Russell’s and visit Charles’ home and studio while learning about his life and times (1862-1926) as a Montana Cowboy & Artist.
Lauri was hoping to be able to hike Tower Rock, an original campsite of  The Lewis and Clark Expedition, which has been designated a Montana State Park;  and is within easy walking distance of the River’s Bend Lodge.  But, because of heavy rain showers, the two days they stayed with us at the Lodge,  Lauri and Blair opted to visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, to learn about adventures of The Lewis and Clark Expedition over hiking in the rain and mud.  Hopefully when Blair returns in the fall to fish the Missouri River, the weather will co-operate and they will be able to hike Tower Rock… maybe even Ruby will be able to come with them.

Breakfast Under Tower Rock over looking the Missouri River

June 17th, 2011 by sorendetienne

Terry an Brenda on deck under Tower Rock over looking the Missouri River

Breakfast on the deck under Tower Rock on the Missouri River

Brenda and Terry from Turner, Montana stayed with us at the River’s Bend Lodge Thursday night.  They were visiting Great Falls to do some shopping and pick up their son Dusty at the airport on Friday.

Dusty 17 years old is flying back from Washington DC, he won the trip to visit our Nation’s capital by writing an essay for a contest sponsored by the Rural Electric Co-Op’s.  Dusty won,  Big Flat Electric’s Trip to Washington DC with his essay.

This was also Brenda and Terry’s Anniversary get-away, so of course I had to make them “The Cowboy Lover’s Apple Pancake” for breakfast and served it on the deck overlooking the Missouri River.  And yes I had to tell them “The Story” behind the name…. check out the link…

Cowboy Lover’s Skillet Apple Pancake

June 17th, 2011 by sorendetienne

Oven Puffed Pancake

Cowboy Lover's Skillet Pancake

This is one of my favorite breakfasts to cook, it’s simple, it’s quick, and easy, the name I made up, because even a Montana Cowboy can’t screw this recipe up and most of us have a cast iron skillet.

The Lover’s part comes from the ingredients, sugar, spice and everything nice just like our girls, EH boys?  I usually cook this for our Honeymooners and Anniversary guest.  Just so I can tell them the story…LOL .  Everyone so far has loved the breakfast and the story… knock on wood….

The recipe comes from the cook book  Inn At The Crossroads  by Pamela Lanier.
