Bald Eagle in Missouri River near Hardy Creek
Today January 9th, 2012 I made my first New Year’s resolutions, but it’s ok because I’m old (almost 60) and everyone knows old folks are a little slow!
New Year’s resolution
- To do this blog at least twice a week (I was thinking everyday but an old guy might not be that ambitious). In each blog I will tell you of my fishing adventures and show you photos of Montana.
- To walk at least an hour every other day (more ambitious) bad back and leg allowing me to.
- But most important resolution is to fish as often and as many different rivers and streams as possible this year. I live on one of the best Blue Ribbon Trout Streams in the United States, the Missouri River at Hardy Creek (about 12 miles downstream from Craig). I am also within a one or two hour drive of 6 other Blue Ribbon Trout Streams.
Today as I was beginning my walk I observed a Bald Eagle In the river I’m not sure if the eagle had caught a fish and was having lunch or just bathing, whichever, it presented a good photo opportunity.

dog. It was about 45* F and windy, this year with the warmer temperatures, have also came high winds, today’s 24 MPH WSW. Still a nice day, any day on the river is a good day!
With my picture taking and sight, seeing this was a 2 hour adventure. With a little luck maybe I will be able to fish this hole I discovered on the river.

At 6:30 AM this morning, while cooking a Cowboy Skillet Pancake breakfast for my guests Kelly and Ewald, a couple from Ketchum, Idaho, I heard an eagle screeching and went out on the deck to see what was going on. On the island just north of the deck a Mule deer faun was standing, legs braced staring down at an adult Bald Eagle that was standing about 10 feet away… directly over head a young Bald Eagle was circling and screeching. As the adult eagle took flight the young eagle attacked it and struck it several different times while they were in-flight across the river. The adult eagle landed in a tree top on the other side of the river near the irrigation pilings, and the young eagle landed about 20 feet higher up the hill on a dead branch. It occurred to me that this was not an attack but maybe some kind of a training exercise. This thought was pretty much confirmed later when I looked for eagles again they were both sitting on the dead branch!
Ewald is from Austria and wholesales Fly-fishing gear in Europe. He lives in Sun Valley, Idaho most of the year his wife Kelly and travels back to Austria several times a year for business. He was excited about fishing the Missouri this morning Kelly and he were putting in at Holter Dam and floating to Craig for the first run this morning.
As they were finishing breakfast this morning a good hatch of Tricos was taking place right off the deck. Ewald told Kelly “They are doing the wedding dance we have to be on the river by the time it is over and they start to hit the water LET’s GO!”

The Family reunion on the Missouri River
Megan and her parents came to Montana for a Family Reunion and a little R&R under the Big Sky. Her father Greg, his sister Barbara,and brothers, Larry and Chuck met at the River’s Bend Lodge with children and spouses.
During their stay at the Lodge in July they attended the Air Show in Great Falls, did some hiking at Tower Rock State Park (only 10 minutes from the Lodge), fished a little, some river rafting, and a lot of reminiscing of child hood days in Montana.

The River’s Bend Lodge, at Hardy Creek, still has a few rooms available for the 4th of July weekend. the Lodge is on the Missouri River about 15 miles north of Holter Dam exit 247 on I15, 57 Seibold Lane (the Prewitt Creek Fishing Access Road).

Emigrant Mountain Range 06/16/2011
Two sister from Lake Oswego, Oregon; Pat and Mary Jane were visiting Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks last week when they decided to spend a night at River’s Bend Lodge, a Montana Bed and Breakfast located at Hardy/ Cascade, Montana, halfway between the two National Parks. The River’s Bend Lodge is located on the Missouri River, south of Tower Rock State Park (an original campsite of the Lewis & Clark Expedition) just a few minutes from exit 247 (Hardy Creek) on Interstate 15.

Meet Ruby a Wirehaired Pointing Griffons puppy and the Star of this Blog
Lauri and Blair visited the River’s Bend Lodge along the Missouri River last week and took in some of the unique Montana scenery and history. The main purpose of their trip to Montana was to get Ruby, a Wirehaired Pointing Griffons puppy. Searching the web for Griffons Breeders they found one in Choteau with puppies that were just the age they wanted.
Being an artist Blair was excited to visit the
Charles Russell Museum in Great Falls were they were able to see original paintings and bronzes from many Western Artists as well as some of Charles Russell’s and visit Charles’ home and studio while learning about his life and times (1862-1926) as a Montana Cowboy & Artist.
Lauri was hoping to be able to hike
Tower Rock, an original campsite of The Lewis and Clark Expedition, which has been designated a Montana State Park; and is within easy walking distance of the
River’s Bend Lodge. But, because of heavy rain showers, the two days they stayed with us at the Lodge, Lauri and Blair opted to visit the
Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, to learn about adventures of The Lewis and Clark Expedition over hiking in the rain and mud. Hopefully when Blair returns in the fall to fish the Missouri River, the weather will co-operate and they will be able to hike Tower Rock… maybe even Ruby will be able to come with them.

If you’re riding in the One Helena Hundred, and need a wonderful lodging option close to Cascade, MT, check out The River’s Bend Lodge, at Hardy Creek. We’re within walking distance of the Prewett Creek Fishing Access.
I decided as long as we were showing Missouri River bridges it would be nice to see the Hardy Bridge (also known as the Untouchables Bridge). I believe the ONE HELENA HUNDRED will take you over this Bridge.

Looking Toward Tower Rock from Lodge's Patio
This has been a long winter a cold and snowy November, December, January, and now February, has me crying ” IS SPRING EVER GOING TO GET HERE ” ? I don’t know why these local Canadian Geese haven’t left for warmer areas yet… but, they are sure complaining about the weather honking and gathering in tight gaggles on the island north of the Lodge’s snow covered patio! I can tell when it is below zero just by looking out of the upstairs window facing the island if I see about 30 blown up puffs of feathers and no long necks or feet, IT’S COLD OUT THERE!
We are actually lucky in Montana, we have lots of Snow Plows and dedicated crews to keep our roads, highways, and streets drivable. It also helps that we don’t have Millions of drivers of course!
I think in Montana, at least down here in the ” Banana Belt” as we used to call South and Central Montana when I lived in the Northeastern Montana (Scobey & Plentywood area, the Arctic Circle) below zero temperatures are more of a hindrance to getting out then the snow is.
Cindy and I have been getting ready for our Valentine Special Guests’, cleaning house, watching the fire burn, fine tuning Cin’s recipe for Shrimp Diane, Homemade Ice cream, and Muffins. The Girl can cook, I don’t mind being the chief bottle washer at all, as long as I get to be the official taster as well! LOL
Super Bowl Sunday she made T-bone Steaks Madrid, sautéed onions and baby red potatoes, and steamed asparagus…………… WOW! A couple of beers and Green Bay Packers winning, I was in Heaven.
Cindy and I are looking forward to meeting all you February couples seeking a LOVER’S GET-AWAY at River’s Bend Lodge.
